Amelia Carr: About Me

‘Ameliorate’ = “To Make Something Better”:

I am an expert vocal coach and singing teacher specialising in teaching children and young singers in musical theatre. I work extensively with those in professional theatre, TV and film. I also teach professional adults (kids grow up!)

I currently teach 1-2-1 and group singing lessons privately from the West End, and a few appointments in my home town of Worthing. I have worked for many full time professional schools and colleges teaching singing, most currently at Laine Theatre Arts. Previously I have worked at Mountview, Bird College, London Studio Centre and Emil Dale Academy as well as with Spirit Young Performers Company.

For the past 20 years I have had the utter pleasure of working with exceptional young voices through 1-2-1 coaching, working at some pretty incredible colleges and schools and through running a successful performing arts school in the South of England. For 13 years I produced award winning full-scale youth Musicals for ages 5 through 18 which has set me out as a uniquely skilled teacher of young voices. As if that wasn't enough, I also hold a Fellowship in Theatre Dance Teaching with the IDTA and I still enjoy examining dance for some schools and festivals.

I run workshops for teachers of singing. I love to pass on my knowledge and share what I am confident at and I am passionate about improving the resources teachers can access for teaching children and teens in their singing lessons. I also enjoy running Masterclasses for young people auditioning for performing arts colleges and musical theatre courses.

I have availability for singing lessons, vocal coaching, performance anxiety coaching and for mentoring also, and use a multi-disciplinary approach to achieve the best vocal outcome for each individual singer.

The changing voice is a growing voice, which means I also takes adult clients from the professional musical theatre field and I enjoy singers from multi-genres at times. Amateur clients are accepted upon request.

Running with the belief that 'you’re not a singing teacher until your student has learnt something’ (Jenevora Williams), I would describe myself as a passionate, motivational teacher with a wealth of experience, skill and knowledge to help you identify the vocal tools of your trade and to thrive vocally.

Coaching and Teaching Qualifications:
I have completed an MA with Distinction in Vocal Pedagogy with the University of Wales Trinity Saint David. My voice research remains focussed on Teaching Young Voices in Musical Theatre, Performance Anxiety and Performance Enhancement for children in professional Musical Theatre. Prior to the MA, I received a Distinction for a PGCert in Vocal Pedagogy with Cardiff Metropolitan University which was also specialising in teaching young voices within professional musical theatre.

I hope to write a book and keep studying voice. Basically, I love my job, I love my art and I invest in it fully.

I am a member of the British Voice Association (BVA), National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) and the Association of Teachers of Singing (AOTOS). I hold a Fellowship in Ballet (IDTA) as well as an Associate in Tap and Modern Jazz (IDTA) which I threw myself through as part of running a successful performing arts school for 10 years.

I hold a DBS, First Aid and Insurance. I am Mental Health First Aider and Youth Mental Health First Aider.

When not enjoying the progress of my students, ‘#CurlyCoach’ will be found sipping on a flat white, curls flowing from an eccentric hair bow. I love my Pup, Bruce and especially enjoy getting beaten at Scrabble by my hubby and recently became a Mummy! I'm a self confessed Fanilow, and enjoy an eclectic music taste. Other interests of mine include helping the homeless, I have a big heart for this work and all I can to support local homelessness where I live.
